It comes from about two hectares of ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines in the Verzella district on the northern slope of Etna, at around 650 metres, on the Cavanera Etnea estate.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe vines, Nerello Mascalese with old local varieties, were planted in the second half of the 19th century; the University of Palermo puts their average age at over 150 years.
