Tasting notes

Crystalline with silvery lights and a very fine bead. The nose joins chalk and gunflint to white flowers, yellow cherry and dried nuts, then opens on citrus, exotic fruit and cocoa butter. The palate is fresh to the point of crisp, markedly mineral, with lemon and orange peel, toasted bread and a long saline finish.

About this wine

Pol Roger is a family house in Épernay, founded in 1849 and still independently owned. Its Blanc de Blancs is declared only in selected years, and 2016 is one of them.

The wine is Chardonnay alone, drawn from Grand Cru villages of the Côte des Blancs — Oiry, Chouilly, Cramant, Avize, Oger and Le Mesnil-sur-Oger — where the chalk subsoil gives Chardonnay its particular cut and salinity. Second fermentation takes place in the house's cellars thirty-three metres underground, among the deepest and coolest in Champagne, and riddling is still done by hand.

The combination of Grand Cru chalk and that slow, cold maturation is what produces a wine this precise.
