Tasting notes
Deep gold with a fine, insistent bead. The nose is built on apricot, almond and sweet spice, framed by a clear chalk minerality and a pastry-shop richness from the long ageing. The palate is broad and vinous, the mousse fully integrated, and the finish is dry, saline and very persistent.
About this wine
Palmes d'Or is the prestige cuvée of Nicolas Feuillatte, the house founded in 1976 at Chouilly in the Côte des Blancs. It is declared only in exceptional years, and the Gold Edition is the dressed-up release of one of them.
The blend is close to equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, drawn almost entirely from Grand Cru vineyards: Chardonnay from Avize, Oger, Cramant, Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Mont-Aimé, Pinot Noir from Ambonnay, Tours-sur-Marne, Aÿ, Verzy and Verzenay. The 2008 then rested roughly ten years in the cellars before release.
2008 is widely held to be one of Champagne's great recent vintages, and the extended ageing suits it.
