Tasting notes

Deep ruby, dense in the glass. The nose is strikingly aromatic for a red: dried cherry and fig over rose petal, orange peel and sweet spice. The palate is velvety and sweet without turning heavy, the dried-fruit concentration held in check by fresh acidity, closing long on cocoa and candied citrus.

About this wine

Cantine Due Palme is a growers' cooperative in Cellino San Marco, deep in the Salento peninsula of Puglia, drawing on hundreds of small vineyard holdings across the flat, sun-struck land between the Adriatic and the Ionian seas.

Aleatico is one of Salento's old curiosities: a dark-skinned, aromatic grape related to Muscat, grown here in small quantities and traditionally made sweet. The bunches are left to dry after picking, concentrating sugar and perfume before a slow fermentation stops short, leaving natural sweetness in the wine.

The result sits apart from the usual Italian dessert styles — red rather than golden, scented rather than merely sweet, and bottled in a half-litre format meant to be shared at the end of a meal.
