Tasting notes

Golden straw with a fine, steady bead. The nose runs from pear and mango through honeysuckle and jasmine to vanilla and brioche. The palate carries quince jelly, apricot preserve, beeswax and acacia honey over firm acidity, closing on candied orange peel, mandarin, cardamom and anise.

About this wine

Pol Roger is a family house in Épernay, founded in 1849 and still independently owned — a rarity in a region long consolidated into groups.

Brut Réserve is its core wine and the bottle the house is judged by: equal thirds of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay drawn from thirty crus, with around a quarter reserve wine from earlier harvests to hold the style steady from year to year. Second fermentation takes place in cellars thirty-three metres underground, among the deepest and coolest in Champagne, and the bottles are still riddled by hand.

Four years on the lees, then at least three months' rest after disgorgement before it leaves Épernay.
