Tasting notes

Golden straw with a fine, steady bead. The nose runs from pear and mango through honeysuckle and jasmine to vanilla and brioche. The palate carries quince jelly, apricot preserve, beeswax and acacia honey over firm acidity, closing on candied orange peel, mandarin, cardamom and anise.

About this wine

Pol Roger is a family house in Épernay, founded in 1849 and still independently owned, and Brut Réserve is the wine it is best known for.

The blend is equal thirds of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay from thirty crus, with roughly a quarter reserve wine from earlier harvests to keep the house style constant. Second fermentation happens in cellars thirty-three metres below Épernay, among the deepest and coolest in Champagne, and the bottles are still riddled by hand.

Many in Champagne consider the magnum the ideal vessel: twice the volume to the same neck, so the wine matures more slowly and keeps its freshness longer.
