Tasting notes

Pale gold. The nose shows white flowers, citrus, stone fruit and a hint of honey. The palate is fresh and textured, with good tension from the absence of malolactic fermentation and a long, mineral finish that will gain complexity with age.

About this wine

The Avril family has lived in Châteauneuf-du-Pape for centuries and helped create France's very first appellation. Today Clos des Papes is run by Paul-Vincent Avril, who works with very low yields to capture the full character of the southern Rhône.

The white is a small part of the estate's production: hand-picked grapes from about 3 hectares, in near-equal parts Grenache Blanc, Clairette, Roussanne, Picpoul, Bourboulenc and Picardan. They are whole-bunch pressed and fermented with native yeasts at low temperature, then rest for around five months on the lees without malolactic fermentation.

Skipping the malolactic keeps the fruit fresh, and the wine can develop in bottle for many years.
