Tasting notes

Deep amber-gold. A complex nose of quince paste, dried apricot, honey, walnut and wet stone, with smoky, almost oxidative notes. The palate is powerful and dry, with a waxy, grippy texture, searching acidity and great length. The finish is savoury, bitter-edged and unmistakable.

About this wine

Coulée de Serrant is a single vineyard of seven hectares above the Loire at Savennières, planted by Cistercian monks in 1130 and continuously worked ever since. It is its own appellation, and it belongs entirely to the Joly family.

Nicolas Joly converted it to biodynamics in 1980. The Chenin Blanc is picked in several passes, fermented with native yeasts in old wood, aged on its lees and bottled with minimal sulphur and no filtration.

Each bottle differs from the last, which is rather the point. Decant it well in advance.
