Tasting notes

Deep ruby colour. The nose combines cherry and dried plum with tobacco, sweet spice and a touch of oak. Medium to full-bodied, with fine, ripe tannins, good acidity and a long, spicy finish that carries the warmth of the Struma Valley.

About this wine

AplauZ is the premium range of Villa Melnik, a family winery in the Struma Valley, the warmest wine region in Bulgaria. Melnik 55 is the local grape created in Melnik by crossing the Broad-Leaved Melnik vine with Valdiguié, keeping the character of the old variety while ripening earlier.

The 2018 vintage was aged in oak: cherry, dried plum, tobacco and spice over fine tannins. It is a serious, warm red that shows how expressive the Melnik grapes can be in the hands of a dedicated producer.

Serve at 16–18 °C with lamb, grilled meat or mature cheeses.
