Tasting notes

Deep ruby with dark violet reflections. Blackberry, blueberry, cinnamon and toasty oak on the nose. The palate is soft and rounded, with good structure and ripe tannins, ending in a very long finish of red fruit.

About this wine

Castello di Volpaia is a fortified hilltop village in Radda in Chianti, around 600 metres above sea level, where the cellars are hidden inside the ancient walls.

Balifico takes its name from the vineyard it comes from: a plot at 450 metres facing south-southwest, on stony sandstone soils. First released in 1985, it was soon recognised as one of the classic Super Tuscans.

In 2018 the grapes were picked by hand, Sangiovese at the end of September and Cabernet Sauvignon in early October, and the wine then aged for 18 months in Allier oak barriques.
