Tasting notes

Pale straw and slightly hazy, with a fine, soft bead rather than a vigorous mousse. The nose is bready and savoury, with green apple, pear skin and a yeasty, almost cidery note. The palate is dry and textured, the lees giving body and a gentle grip. The finish is clean, tangy and persistent.

About this wine

Casa Coste Piane works a small holding at Santo Stefano, high in the Valdobbiadene hills north of Treviso, where the slopes are steep enough that every row is still tended by hand.

The estate is one of the keepers of the old Valdobbiadene method: the wine takes its bubbles from a single fermentation finished in the bottle, with no disgorging, so it rests on its own yeast lees. That gives a gently cloudy, lightly sparkling wine quite unlike industrial Prosecco, built from Glera grown on the family's terraces.

It is a wine of texture rather than froth, and shows best poured slowly into a plain glass.
