Tasting notes

Garnet with a bricking rim. The nose shows cassis and plum with cigar box, smoke, earth and the gravelly, mineral notes typical of Haut-Brion. The palate is broad and harmonious, well structured, with softer tannins than the 1995, mellow fruit and a long, complex finish.

About this wine

Château Haut-Brion in Pessac, on the edge of the city of Bordeaux, is the only estate outside the Médoc ranked Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1855. As early as 1521 it became the first Bordeaux wine named after its own terroir, and today it belongs to Domaine Clarence Dillon.

The 1996 blends 50% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon and 11% Cabernet Franc, aged in oak barrels, 65% of them new, and bottled in the summer of 1998.

The estate calls 1996 a vintage of contrasts, in which the Cabernets performed especially well. Nearly thirty years on it is a mature, fully evolved first growth.
