Tasting notes

Luminous straw yellow. The nose leads with struck flint and gunsmoke before yielding lemon oil, white pepper and a hint of crushed fennel. The palate is firm and linear, more savoury than fruity, with a chalky grip and vibrant acidity. The finish is remarkably persistent, closing on smoke, salt and bitter citrus pith.

About this wine

Les Romains is Domaine Vacheron's flint cuvée, drawn from a parcel of silex soils on the eastern side of the appellation. Flint gives Sancerre its most smoky, austere expression, and in the hands of the Vacheron family it also gives one of the most long-lived.

The vines are farmed biodynamically and picked by hand. Fermentation runs on indigenous yeasts and the wine is raised on fine lees in large oak casks for close to a year, which broadens the palate while leaving the stony signature of the soil untouched.

A Sancerre of real depth that only improves with bottle age.
