Tasting notes
Deep ruby red. The nose is rich with ripe red and dark fruit, toasty and spicy hints and a smoky volcanic note. The palate is full, warm and enveloping, with firm yet polished tannins and a long, savoury finish.
About this wine
Pietradolce is the Faro family estate in Solicchiata, near Castiglione di Sicilia, on the northern slope of Mount Etna. Contrada Rampante comes from a small plot of pre-phylloxera Nerello Mascalese bush vines, 80-90 years old, at around 850 metres on sandy soils rich in volcanic stones.
The grapes are hand-picked in the second half of October and macerate for about 18 days in tulip-shaped concrete vats, before 14 months in fine, lightly toasted oak and further rest in bottle.
This single-contrada wine shows the richer, warmer side of high-altitude Etna, with depth and a long, savoury finish.
