Tasting notes

Bright ruby with a garnet edge. Sour cherry, redcurrant and dried violet on the nose, with tobacco leaf, balsamic herbs and a faintly earthy note. The palate is medium-bodied and juicy, its red fruit cut by firm acidity and fine, slightly dusty tannin. The finish is clean and savoury, closing on cherry stone and dried thyme.

About this wine

Isole e Olena was formed when the De Marchi family joined two neighbouring estates above Barberino Val d'Elsa in the 1950s. Paolo De Marchi farmed it for four decades and made it one of the reference points of Chianti Classico; the estate changed hands in 2022 but its vineyard work continues.

The Chianti Classico is almost entirely Sangiovese, with a small share of Canaiolo, fermented in stainless steel and aged in a mix of large casks and used barriques. The style has always favoured perfume and drinkability over extraction.
