Tasting notes

Translucent garnet with a brick rim. The nose is savoury and classical: sour cherry, dried rose, iron filings, tar and a touch of forest floor. The palate is lean and tightly wound, with fine chalky tannin and bracing acidity, finishing long on red fruit, dried herbs and ferrous mineral.

About this wine

Proprietà Sperino is the Alto Piemonte estate of Luca and Paolo De Marchi, who replanted the historic Lessona vineyards in the late 1990s after decades of abandonment. The site sits on acidic marine sands, a soil quite unlike the limestone and marl of the Langhe.

Lessona is built on Nebbiolo, fermented in open vats and aged for years in large old wood before release. The estate works without shortcuts: long macerations, no new oak, and bottling only once the wine has settled.

The 2013 shows the austere, high-acid style of the appellation — pale in colour, firm in tannin, and closer to Burgundy in weight than to southern Piedmont.
