Tasting notes

Medium-deep ruby with garnet edges. Aromas of ripe red cherry, dried herbs, tobacco and sweet spice from 18 months in Bulgarian oak. The palate is medium to full-bodied with ripe, polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, spicy, savoury finish typical of the Melnik grape.

About this wine

AplauZ Shiroka Melnishka Loza 2018 is Villa Melnik's premium-range expression of the Broad-Leaved Melnik Vine, the indigenous grape of the Melnik region in the Struma Valley of south-west Bulgaria. The variety is found nowhere else and gives wines of character, with firm structure and a distinctly local personality.

The wine is made from carefully selected grapes and aged for 18 months in Bulgarian oak barrels, which lend it depth, spice and a smooth, polished texture. A few years of bottle age have brought the fruit and oak into balance.

Serve at 16–18 °C with roast lamb, game and mature cheeses.
