Tasting notes

Medium ruby with garnet hints. The nose combines the fresh red fruit of the unoaked portion with the spice, dried herbs and gentle oak of the barrel-aged half. Medium-bodied with fine, ripe tannins and lively acidity, finishing long and savoury. A rare, authentic expression of Melnik.

About this wine

Shiroka Melnishka Loza (Broad-Leaved Melnik Vine) is the emblematic grape of the Melnik region, an indigenous variety found nowhere else. Historically it was grown as a goblet-trained bush about 80 cm above the ground. Villa Melnik has preserved a tiny one-decare plot of such bush vines, which keeps surprising with impressive results.

This Rare Varieties bottling from 2020 is made exclusively from grapes picked in that bush-vine plot. Half of the wine fermented in stainless steel without any oak contact, while the other half aged for 24 months in second-fill Bulgarian oak barrels.

Serve at 16–18 °C with lamb, game and mature cheeses.
