Tasting notes

Opaque garnet. An intense nose of dried cherry, prune, cocoa, coffee and sweet spice. The palate is thick and velvety, sweet but held in balance by firm acidity and gentle tannin, with layers of raisined dark fruit. The finish is long, warm and bittersweet.

About this wine

Tommaso Bussola took over his uncle's small holding in Negrar in the 1980s and built a reputation for Valpolicella of unusual concentration, working steep terraced vineyards in the Classico heartland with very low yields.

Recioto is the historic sweet wine of the valley and the ancestor of Amarone: the best bunches are laid on racks to dry for months, then pressed and fermented only partway, so natural grape sugar remains. Bussola ages it in small oak before bottling.

It is a dense, dark dessert red rather than a delicate sweet wine.
