How to serve it
Tasting notes
Translucent garnet, lightening at the rim with age. The nose is classically Tuscan: sour cherry, dried rose, tobacco leaf, balsamic herbs and a hint of forest floor. The palate is lean in frame yet remarkably persistent, with fine-grained tannin, bracing acidity and savoury depth rather than weight. The finish is extremely long, leaving cherry pit, iron and wild mint.
About this wine
Case Basse sits on the cool western flank of Montalcino, where Gianfranco Soldera planted Sangiovese in the 1970s and spent his life proving how little intervention great fruit needs. The estate keeps a botanical garden between the rows and works without herbicides or selected yeasts.
The wine ferments in open vats and ages for years in large Slavonian oak botti before release. From the 2006 vintage onwards it has been labelled Toscana IGT rather than Brunello, a choice Soldera made on his own terms, and it remains pure Sangiovese from the same vines.
One of Italy's most sought-after and longest-lived reds.
