Tasting notes

Deep ruby red. The nose is generous, with blackberry and blackcurrant joined by fresh mint, white pepper, cinnamon and cocoa, and a floral hint of violet. The palate is rich and velvety, with ripe, polished tannins, a vibrant core of fruit and a long, warm finish of dark berries and sweet spice.

About this wine

Solaia by Marchesi Antinori comes from the roughly 20-hectare vineyard of the same name on the Tignanello estate in Chianti Classico, facing south-west at 350 to 400 metres on albarese and galestro soils. It is made only in the best years and has been one of Italy's reference wines since its first vintage in 1978.

In 2017 an April frost reduced yields, and a hot, dry summer produced small, concentrated berries. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese were harvested by hand between 20 September and 6 October and vinified separately.

After around 18 months in new French oak barriques and further ageing in bottle, the 2017 Solaia shows the richness of the vintage with the elegance that defines this wine.
