Tasting notes

Straw yellow with greenish reflections. An intense, markedly varietal and elegant nose of citrus, broom flower and aromatic herbs. The palate is balanced and precise, with notable salinity and a clear mineral character that runs through to a long, dry finish.

About this wine

Cucaione is Piero Mancini's Superiore bottling of Vermentino di Gallura, the higher tier of Sardinia's only DOCG and a category that demands lower yields and riper fruit than the standard wine.

The grapes come from the family's own vineyards on decomposed granite around Olbia, where sea winds and poor, free-draining soils concentrate flavour without weight. Fermentation runs at a controlled 18 °C in stainless steel with no oak at any stage, so the varietal aromatics and the mineral signature of the site stay to the fore. It is a more intense, more structured Vermentino, and a better match for serious cooking.
