Tasting notes

Bright garnet, translucent at the rim. Fresh cherry typical of high-altitude Sangiovese, with aromatic herbs such as thyme and rosemary and a note of liquorice. On the palate the tannins are silky, the acidity bright, and the long finish is savoury and almost saline.

About this wine

Biondi-Santi, at the Tenuta Greppo estate in Montalcino, is the cellar associated with the birth of Brunello: the first vintage dates from 1888, and the family's work defined what the wine became.

The wine is made only from fruit grown on the estate's own high-altitude vineyards, fermented in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts, and matured for three years in large Slavonian oak casks. There is no new oak and no concession to a modern, extracted style.

2015 was a hot, dry growing season that brought the fruit to full ripeness, giving a Brunello that is more open and perfumed in youth than the estate's cooler vintages.
