Tasting notes

Intense ruby red. The nose unfolds with ripe red fruit, plum and dates, joined by Mediterranean herbs, violets, ginger and a note of chilli-spiked chocolate. The palate is soft and silky, fresh and long, with polished tannins and a persistent finish of liquorice, cocoa and red berries.

About this wine

Pian delle Vigne is the Antinori estate in Montalcino, six kilometres south-west of the town, owned by the family since 1995 and named after a 19th-century railway station that still stands on the property. The vineyards cover 65 hectares at around 130 metres above sea level, facing south-west.

The wine is 100% Sangiovese. The 2017 growing season was hot and dry, and the rains of early September helped the grapes to ripen evenly. After fermentation the wine ages for two years in large oak casks of 30 to 80 hectolitres, followed by a long rest in bottle before release.

The result is a Brunello of classic profile: ripe red fruit, Mediterranean herbs and spice carried by soft, silky tannins and the freshness of Sangiovese.
