Tasting notes
Dense and powerful, with notes of cassis, plum, black fruit and liquorice, complemented by cedar, smoke and dried sage. The tannins are soft yet multi-layered, giving firm structure and a long, complex finish.
About this wine
Château Léoville Poyferré is a Second Growth of the 1855 classification, owned by the Cuvelier family since 1920. Its 80 hectares of vines lie on deep gravel terraces along the Gironde estuary in Saint-Julien.
The estate itself calls 2005 the "Apotheosis": a sunny yet classic year, dry and without heatwaves. The blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot produced a dense, powerful wine with soft but layered tannins and the structure for long ageing.
Twenty years on, it is a superb example of a great Saint-Julien vintage.
