How to serve it
Tasting notes
Pale gold with green glints. The nose is quietly expressive, on white peach, quince, lemon zest and acacia honey, with a faint note of chalk. Completely dry on the palate yet rounded, the barrel fermentation lending texture, and the finish stays fresh on citrus and green apple.
About this wine
Bernard Baudry founded his estate at Cravant-les-Côteaux in 1975; his son Matthieu has worked alongside him since 2000. The Chinon vineyards have been farmed organically since 2006.
About a tenth of the holdings is planted to Chenin Blanc, and this white comes from several of those parcels on clay-limestone slopes, with vines between five and fifteen years old. Fermentation is slow, in a 500-litre oak barrel, which gives the wine a little breadth without any obvious oak flavour.
Chinon is far better known for its reds, which makes this one of the appellation's quieter pleasures: completely dry, but rounder than most Loire Chenin at this price.
