Tasting notes

Bright golden yellow. A deep, layered nose of ripe pear, white peach, toasted hazelnut, beeswax and smoke, with a clear mineral note of struck stone. The palate is fuller and more structured than the estate's village bottling, with firm acidity, a creamy lees-derived texture and considerable concentration. The finish is long, saline and gently nutty.

About this wine

En Barbi is Domaine du Pélican's single-vineyard Chardonnay, a parcel of older vines on blue marl near Montigny-lès-Arsures. Guillaume d'Angerville and his team treat it as a cru in its own right and bottle it separately only in the stronger vintages.

Farming is biodynamic, the fruit is whole-bunch pressed and fermentation runs on native yeasts in barrel, where the wine then spends an extended élevage sur lie with the casks kept topped up. The extra concentration of the site shows as weight and length rather than as power.
