Tasting notes

Luminous pale gold. The nose brings yellow apple, lemon curd, hazelnut and a distinct smoky, gunflint note, with white flowers behind. The palate is precise and medium-bodied, the acidity firm, the barrel ageing adding breadth rather than oak flavour. It finishes dry and long on citrus, almond and a chalky, saline mineral edge.

About this wine

Domaine du Pélican was founded in 2012 when Guillaume d'Angerville, of the Volnay estate, acquired vineyards in the Jura around Arbois. The holdings sit on grey and blue marl, and the whole property is farmed biodynamically.

This Arbois Chardonnay is made in the Burgundian manner the owners know best: whole-bunch pressing, fermentation with indigenous yeasts and ageing in used barrels, topped up so no oxidative character develops. It offers Jura Chardonnay in its clearest form, where the marl soils give a smoky, saline dimension Burgundy rarely shows.
