Tasting notes
Deep ruby with purple hints. The nose shows blackcurrant, blackberry and plum with cedar, tobacco, mint and sweet spice. The palate is full and structured, with ripe, dense tannins, fresh acidity from the Langhe hills and a long, savoury finish.
About this wine
Gaja is a family wine house based in the village of Barbaresco, in the heart of Piedmont's Langhe hills, and one of the names that turned Italian wine into a global reference.
Although the house is known above all for Nebbiolo, "Darmagi" is its bold exception: a red based on Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in 1978 on a Barbaresco hillside that had always grown Nebbiolo. The name means "what a pity" in Piedmontese dialect, the comment of Angelo Gaja's father on seeing the change.
The 2016, from an excellent Langhe vintage, is a structured red that rewards decanting.
