Tasting notes

Garnet red. Dark cherry, dried rose, orange peel, iron and earthy spice on the nose. The palate is deep and structured, with dense but fine tannins, lively acidity and a long, ferrous, savoury finish.

About this wine

Nervi is the historic winery of Gattinara in northern Piedmont, today part of the estates of Roberto Conterno of Giacomo Conterno in Serralunga d'Alba, who personally oversees the work in the cellar. Here Nebbiolo is known locally as Spanna.

The Valferana vineyard, already mentioned in the municipal records of Gattinara in 1242, covers 8 hectares at 320 metres on soil exceptionally rich in iron and manganese. The wine ferments with native yeasts in oak vats with three to four weeks of maceration and ages for at least 40 months in old casks of 10 to 76 hectolitres.

The result is a single-vineyard Nebbiolo whose character is shaped by its mineral soil, with long ageing potential.
