Tasting notes

Deep garnet. Dark cherry, rose, liquorice, tar, iron and forest floor on the nose. The palate is powerful and austere in youth, with dense, firm tannins, vibrant acidity and a very long, savoury finish. Decant well or cellar for many years.

About this wine

The Francia vineyard in Serralunga d'Alba was bought by Giovanni Conterno in 1974 and until 2008 was the only source of grapes for Giacomo Conterno, the legendary house whose Barolo has been famous since the 1920s. Today the estate is run by Roberto Conterno, the third generation.

The vineyard faces west-south-west on calcareous marl, with yields of around 20 hl/ha; until 2015 the wine was labelled Cascina Francia. It ferments for three to four weeks in temperature-controlled wooden vats and then ages for about four years in large casks.
