Tasting notes

Deep purple-ruby with violet reflections. Black cherry, damson and blackberry on the nose, with liquorice, violets and a faint earthy note. The palate is juicy and fleshy, with low acidity, soft tannin and an attractive bitter twist on the sides. The finish is clean and moderately long, leaving crushed black fruit and almond skin.

About this wine

Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio has been based at Monchiero in the Barolo zone since the nineteenth century and is best known for Monprivato, but the family farms its Dolcetto with the same care. Bricco Mirasole is a single parcel whose fruit goes exclusively into this wine.

Fermentation takes place in stainless steel with a short maceration, and the wine rests in large neutral casks rather than small oak, so nothing covers the grape's dark fruit and bitter-almond edge. Mauro Mascarello has long argued that Dolcetto deserves serious vineyard work rather than being treated as a by-product.

A Piedmontese everyday red with real depth.
