Tasting notes

Deep ruby with violet highlights. The nose opens on mineral, almost flinty notes, then blackcurrant, blueberry, plum jam and black cherry, with liquorice, pepper and dried violet. The palate is harmonious, the tannins soft and the finish long and juicy.

About this wine

Le Sabbie dell'Etna Rosso is Firriato's red from the Cavanera estate on the north-eastern flank of Etna. The vines sit at around 700 metres in sandy volcanic soils of ash and lapilli, free-draining and poor, which keeps yields naturally low.

The grapes are picked by hand in October and fermented in stainless steel, with no oak at any stage, so that the clean fruit and the mineral signature of the volcano come through undisguised. The wine then rests about six months in bottle before release.
