Tasting notes

Deep ruby, almost opaque at the core. The nose is ripe and warm: black cherry in syrup, plum, dried fig, with tobacco leaf and a note of Mediterranean scrub behind the fruit. The palate is full and soft, the tannins round rather than gripping, and the finish carries the variety's characteristic bitter-almond edge.

About this wine

Cantine Due Palme is a growers' cooperative based at Cellino San Marco, in the Salento peninsula at the southern end of Puglia, pooling fruit from a large number of small holdings across the plain between the Adriatic and the Ionian.

Negroamaro is the backbone grape of this land — the name is usually read as a compound of black and bitter, and both halves are earned. "Selvamara" is Due Palme's straightforward expression of it: fruit grown on red soils over limestone, under the hard southern sun that gives these wines their depth of colour and their ripe, sun-warmed character.

It is a red made to be drunk rather than kept, generous and immediately recognisable as Pugliese.
