Tasting notes

Deep ruby with purple glints. The nose offers dark berries, black pepper and violet with hints of sweet spice from the oak. Concentrated and structured on the palate, with ripe tannins, good freshness and a long, peppery finish.

About this wine

La Monaca is the single-vineyard red of Tenuta Sallier de La Tour, the estate near Palermo that the Tasca d'Almerita family has looked after since 2008 and where Syrah is the leading grape.

It comes from the two-hectare vineyard of the same name, planted in 2011 on a north-east facing slope at 320 metres. The soil is sandy, airy and very well drained, with active limestone and potassium. Yields are low, around 70 quintals per hectare, and fermentation lasts about two weeks at 25-30 °C.

After full malolactic fermentation the wine matures in French oak barrels, giving a concentrated, structured Syrah that benefits from decanting.
