How to serve it
Tasting notes
Deep ruby red tending to purple. The nose is marked by violets, dark plum, blackberry and black cherry, with a hint of cocoa. The palate is full and velvety, with soft, rounded tannins, good acidity that keeps it fresh, and a medium-long finish of dark fruit and a gentle bitter-chocolate note.
About this wine
Lagrein is the native red grape of South Tyrol, and Cantina Girlan grows it in the warm Bassa Atesina, at 280 to 300 metres on the eastern side of the valley. The deep, sandy and warm soils help this late-ripening variety reach full maturity every year.
The grapes are harvested by hand and fermented in stainless steel at controlled temperature. The wine then ages for six months, partly in large wooden casks and partly in concrete vats, a combination that softens the tannins while keeping the fruit bright.
This is the classic, approachable face of Lagrein: dark fruit, violets and a velvety texture, made by one of the most consistent cooperatives of Alto Adige.
