Tasting notes

Ruby red with garnet reflections. The nose is intense and layered, with ripe cherry, sour cherry and red berries, followed by notes of undergrowth, dried rose and sweet spice. The palate is elegant yet dense, with fresh acidity, tangible, fine-grained tannins and a long, savoury finish of red fruit.

About this wine

Trattmann is the leading Pinot Nero Riserva of Cantina Girlan and the heart of the South Tyrolean tradition with this variety. The grapes come from the slopes of the eastern Bassa Atesina, on clay and limestone soils, and from the winery's oldest vineyards in the Oltradige at around 500 metres, on moraine soils over porphyry.

Around 10% of the grapes ferment as whole clusters to add aromatic lift and structure. The wine then ages for 12 months in barriques and small casks, a further eight months in large oak and eight more months in bottle before release.

Trattmann is regularly cited among the best Italian Pinot Noirs: elegant yet dense, with the freshness that only alpine vineyards can give.
