Tasting notes

Garnet red. The bouquet combines ripe red cherries, wild rose, cedar and camphor with dark spice and a hint of mint. On the palate it is structured and serious, with fine, tightly woven tannins, fresh acidity and a long finish that promises excellent development over many years.

About this wine

Castellero is a tiny south-facing parcel of under 0.7 hectares in the commune of Barolo, planted in 1970 on sandy soils derived from the Diano sandstones. The Brezza family, winemakers in Barolo since 1885, bottle it as a single-vineyard wine only in the best vintages; otherwise the grapes go into their classic Barolo.

The Nebbiolo (Lampia clone) is farmed organically and vinified traditionally, with long maceration and ageing in large Slavonian oak casks so that the site, not the wood, defines the wine.

A serious, age-worthy Barolo that deserves time in the cellar and a large glass at the table.
