Tasting notes

Garnet with a brick rim. A deep, slow-building nose of dried rose, morello cherry, tar, liquorice, tobacco leaf and forest floor. The palate is powerful but polished, with ample chalky tannin, firm acidity and a long savoury middle that shows no trace of new wood. The finish lasts minutes, echoing cherry, balsamic herbs and iron.

About this wine

Vigna San Giuseppe is the warmest and best-exposed parcel within Cavallotto's Bricco Boschis hill in Castiglione Falletto, and the family bottles it only as a Riserva. The vines are among the oldest on the estate and the selection is made in the vineyard rather than the cellar.

The wine ferments spontaneously with a long maceration, then spends several years in large Slavonian oak casks and further time in bottle before release. Cavallotto's refusal to shorten that cycle is why its Riserva arrives already open rather than closed and tannic.

One of the great traditional Barolos of the commune.
