Tasting notes

Deep ruby colour. The nose opens on black cherry, plum, dried herbs, leather and sweet spice. The palate is powerful and full-bodied, with ripe tannins carrying the dark fruit into a long, savoury finish.

About this wine

Château de Saint Cosme lies in the heart of Gigondas and has belonged to the Barruol family since 1490. Today Louis Barruol runs the estate, farming the vines organically with no herbicides or synthetic treatments.

His Châteauneuf-du-Pape comes from three plots, La Crau, Valori and Christia, and blends Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah and Cinsault. The grapes are fermented with whole bunches and wild yeasts, then the wine spends 24 months in old 228-litre barrels and is bottled without fining or filtration.

This traditional, hands-off approach gives a powerful, generous southern Rhône red with ripe tannins and the structure to age gracefully for many years.
