Tasting notes

Deep ruby, almost opaque in the centre. The nose is complex and rich, on very ripe black fruit, cassis and dark cherry, with cedar, graphite and sweet tobacco. The body is tight and structured around pronounced chalky tannin, the acidity firm, the finish very long. Capable of twenty years in a good cellar.

About this wine

Bernard Baudry founded his estate at Cravant-les-Côteaux in 1975; his son Matthieu has worked alongside him since 2000. The Chinon vineyards have been farmed organically since 2006.

La Croix Boissée is made in limited quantity from small parcels of vines between fifteen and forty years old, on a strongly calcareous south-facing slope. It spends twenty-four months in oak barrels and a further nine in concrete, and is bottled unfiltered.

This is the estate's most serious cuvée, and the one that shows the chalk most clearly: tight when young, it needs years before the fruit and the stone come into balance.
