Tasting notes

Translucent ruby. The nose is delicate and savoury, with wild raspberry, redcurrant and dried rose over flint, iron and a hint of woodsmoke. The palate is light-bodied yet taut, the tannins powdery and the acidity bright, carrying the red fruit to a long, mineral finish with a distinctly stony, salted edge.

About this wine

Sancerre is famous for Sauvignon Blanc, but Domaine Vacheron has spent decades proving that the appellation can also make serious Pinot Noir. Belle Dame is the estate's flagship red, from a single parcel of flint soils farmed biodynamically by the Vacheron cousins.

The oldest vines on the site are more than fifty years old and yields are kept very low. Grapes are sorted by hand, fermented with indigenous yeasts and a gentle extraction, then aged for around eighteen months in oak barrels, very few of them new.

Fine-boned, savoury and surprisingly age-worthy, it stands comparison with good Burgundy.
