Tasting notes

Medium ruby with garnet highlights. An autumnal, spicy nose of sour cherry, dried herbs, tobacco leaf, ash and crushed stone. The palate is full yet weightless, with fine, chalky tannins, vibrant acidity and intense volcanic minerality, closing on a long, austere finish of red fruit and spice.

About this wine

Tenuta delle Terre Nere is the estate of Marco de Grazia in Contrada Calderara, Randazzo, on the northern slope of Mount Etna. Calderara Sottana is the estate's grand cru and one of the stoniest sites on the whole volcano, with soils of pumice and basalt and vines of 50 to 100 years at around 600–650 metres above sea level.

The wine is 100% Nerello Mascalese, aged for 14 months in barriques, tonneaux and large French oak casks (15% new) and then one month in stainless steel before bottling.

Autumnal and spicy, aromatic yet austere, it fills the mouth while staying light on its feet, a red that shows how Etna can combine the finesse of Burgundy with the warmth of Sicily. 14.5% alcohol.
