Tasting notes

Deep, concentrated ruby. The nose is elegant and intense, opening on vanilla and cocoa before dark fruit preserved in spirit, with dried violet and a sweet-spice note from the barrique. The palate is broad and firmly built, the tannins fine-grained and still tightly wound, and the finish is long and savoury. A wine made to be waited for.

About this wine

Castello di Volpaia is a historic estate in the high hills at the heart of Chianti Classico. Il Puro is its rarest red, drawn from a single plot: the Casanova vineyard, planted in 2001 with old local Sangiovese clones selected on the estate over more than sixty years and left ungrafted, on their own roots.

The hot, dry 2017 season cut yields to almost nothing and only 1,483 bottles were made. After fermentation the wine spends eighteen months in barriques of Allier oak. The result is a Sangiovese of real structure and depth, built for long ageing in the cellar.
