Tasting notes

Deep ruby-purple. Black pepper, blackberry and black olive on the nose, with violets, smoked bacon and a resinous herbal note. The palate is firm and sinewy, its dark fruit carried by fresh acidity and tight, grainy tannin rather than sweetness. The finish is long and savoury, leaving cracked pepper, liquorice and bay leaf.

About this wine

Paolo De Marchi planted Syrah at Isole e Olena in the 1980s, long before international varieties were common in Chianti, and bottled the results in a small range he called Collezione De Marchi. The vines sit on the estate's higher, stonier slopes above Barberino Val d'Elsa.

The grapes are destemmed and fermented in steel, then aged in French barriques. The aim was never to imitate the Rhône but to see what Tuscan altitude and galestro soil would do with the variety: the wine is peppery and taut rather than jammy.
