Tasting notes

Deep garnet. A complex nose of dark cherry, kirsch, dried rose, leather and sweet spice. The palate is rich and powerful for Gamay, with integrated tannins, warmth and a long, savoury finish. Serve slightly below room temperature in a large glass, letting it breathe briefly to reveal its full aromatic range.

About this wine

Jean and Agnès Foillard took over the family estate in Villié-Morgon in 1980 and are now among the most respected names in Beaujolais. Together with Marcel Lapierre, Jean-Paul Thévenet and Guy Breton they formed the so-called "Gang of Four", inspired by Jules Chauvet's ideas on natural wine.

The vineyards are farmed organically, fermentation uses whole bunches through carbonic maceration, and sulphur is added sparingly, only before bottling. "Athanor" is a cuvée with exceptionally long ageing: four years in barrique and almost two in bottle before release, many years after the harvest.
