How to serve it
Tasting notes
Intense ruby red. The nose shows plum and red cherry over ripe liquorice, with balsamic and savoury notes and a touch of sweet spice. The palate is full and energetic, with clear, well-defined tannins, good freshness and a long finish of dark fruit and spice.
About this wine
Jorio is the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo of Umani Ronchi, named after Gabriele D'Annunzio's play The Daughter of Jorio. First produced in 1993, it was created in partnership with growers from Abruzzo and has become one of the best-known wines of the region.
The grapes, 100% Montepulciano, come from several municipalities in the hills of Abruzzo and are harvested by hand from the end of September to early October. After fermentation the wine ages for around 12 months, half in large oak casks and half in used barriques, so that the oak supports rather than covers the fruit.
The result is a full, energetic red with ripe plum, cherry and balsamic notes, a generous expression of the Montepulciano grape.
