How to serve it
Tasting notes
Deep ruby red. An imposing nose of elderberry, plum and small red fruits with sandalwood and tobacco. The palate is full and structured, with ripe, polished tannins, fine oak and a long, well-defined finish.
About this wine
The Mazzei family has made wine since 1435 and owns Castello di Fonterutoli in Castellina in Chianti. The Siepi vineyard has belonged to the family for centuries, and in the early 1980s Merlot was planted there alongside Sangiovese, one of the first such cases in Chianti Classico. The first Siepi vintage was 1992.
The wine blends Sangiovese and Merlot in equal parts and ages 18 months in French oak, 70% new, followed by four months in concrete. It is an imposing red with elderberry, plum, small red fruit, sandalwood and tobacco and a long, well-defined finish.
