Tasting notes

Deep ruby red. The nose is rich and aromatic, with blackcurrant, ripe plum and cherry softened by the Merlot, together with notes of Mediterranean herbs, cedar and sweet spice. The palate is full and supple, with a complex structure, fine tannins and a long, pleasurable finish that promises good ageing.

About this wine

Guidalberto is the second wine of Tenuta San Guido, the Bolgheri estate famous for Sassicaia. It is named after Guidalberto della Gherardesca, a pioneer of agriculture in Bolgheri, and the label shows the small chapel of San Guido that gives the estate its name.

The grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, come from vineyards at 100 to 300 metres above sea level on limestone and marl soils. The 2020 vintage was hot, with rapid ripening and an early hand harvest, and the blend carries a higher share of Merlot than usual.

The wine ages in barriques, mostly French with a small part American oak, producing a Bolgheri red that is complex and age-worthy yet full and immediately pleasurable.
