Tasting notes

Intense ruby red with purple highlights. The nose is fresh, elegant and intense, with blackcurrant, black cherry and ripe plum, followed by hints of mint, tobacco, sweet spice and cocoa. On the palate acidity, tannins and fruit are in superb balance; the texture is dense yet silky and the finish is long, layered and complex.

About this wine

Solaia is the iconic wine of Marchesi Antinori, born from the vineyard of the same name on the Tignanello estate in the heart of Chianti Classico. The vineyard faces south-west at 350 to 400 metres on albarese and galestro soils, and the wine is produced only in exceptional vintages, the first being 1978.

The 2012 season began with late bud break and continued with a dry summer. The grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon with Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese, were picked by hand between 25 September and 10 October and sorted berry by berry before fermentation.

The wine aged for around 18 months in new French oak barriques, followed by a long rest in bottle, giving a Solaia of remarkable balance, elegance and length.
